5 Tips to Potty Train Your Pup

Potty training isn’t just a puppy thing. 💛 Many dogs (even adults) are learning this after shelter life, limited potty breaks, or never having a home at all. Accidents aren’t bad behavior; they’re part of the transition.

These tips are here to help set dogs up for success — especially when used with patience, consistency, and a little grace for the learning curve.

1. Give Them Every Chance to Succeed.

Take your dog out often — after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and before bed. The more opportunities they have to potty outside, the faster they’ll learn that outside is the right place.

2. Stick to a Routine.

Consistency matters! Take your pup out on a schedule (often every hour at first).

If they potty, celebrate big!

If not, return them to the crate and try again in 20–30 minutes.

Over time, you’ll learn their natural potty rhythm.

3. Watch Closely, or Crate.

When you can watch them, great!

When you can’t, use a properly sized crate (big enough to stand, turn, and lie down). Crates help prevent accidents and teach dogs to hold it until they’re outside.

4. Make Successful Potty Trips Worth It.

When they go potty outside, reward immediately —treats, praise, belly rubs, excitement! Potty = good things happen.

Bonus tip: take them to the same spot on a leash and stand still to reduce distractions.

5. Eliminate Temptation.

Set your pup up for success with a few simple tweaks!

  • Skip potty pads (they blur the goal).

  • Clean accidents with enzyme cleaner to remove lingering scent.

  • Pick up water 1–2 hours before bed.

  • Keep nighttime potty trips calm and boring — reward included.

Most importantly, not every dog is the same so what works for some may not work for others. But EVERY dog deserves the time and patience to learn what “home” really means.
